Robert Allen made a declaration akin to this one over twenty years ago. For a while, I was so impressed with this particular double-dog dare that I threw this quote around like it was my own every chance I got!  I was convinced that I was on top of the world, and no matter what life brought my way, I’d never have to be poor – not as long as I was living in America. I repeated Robert Allen’s mantra to several people.  I was boasting about the success of my $10 million business.  I was cocky because I felt like I was on top of the world. I knew I could always weather the storm of any market. And I knew how to navigate and add to the worth of any business. Little did I know I was tempting God, and when God wants to show you his power, you will most definitely feel it.

Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Death

April, 22nd 1998, my whole world collapsed. In a span of 24 hours, I lost my business, the bottom fell out of my marriage, and my entire world was spinning out of control Just that fast. Of course, when something like that happens, the first thing you have to do is eat your words. I remembered my own arrogance – all those loud-mouth statements I had made to other people. I had always been so certain that if I, the Great and Powerful Toyin, lost everything, I would just get it all back. No problem. People do it everyday.

Then the indictment came down… and my confidence with it.

I’d made 179 appearances in the Criminal division of Riverside superior court, and another  200 or so in other civil departments. I was sued several times and I sued several people, including the County of Riverside, the District Attorney of Riverside, judges, lawyers, ex-employees, my ex-wife, my divorce lawyers and anyone who even looked at me wrong! At some point I had over 30 lawsuits going in addition to defending my four counts of felony indictments.

Oh, No He Did’ent!

If you think filing thirty lawsuits is over the top, get a load of this: I ran for judge just to dethrone the judge presiding over my case. My goal was to create a conflict of interest and force him off my case. When my lawyer got to court after I had filed my election papers with the county, the new presiding judge asked him, “Do you know that your client is running for Judgeship?” My lawyer was shocked!

In addition to one full-time lawyer at a salary of $12,000 per month, I also had several other lawyers on retainer defending various lawsuits. In all, I was spending close to $50,000 per month just defending and fighting for my freedom in court.

I was determined to defend my good name at all costs! And I was so angry at the situation and everyone involved in my legal woes that I refused to compromise or settle any of the cases.  I had been wronged and justice was not optional. Even when the Judge and the DA offered a settlement of my felony indictment, I refused the settlement because their offers were self-serving and I wanted my reputation back at all cost.  And of course, I needed the opportunity to sue them after winning so I could recoup my investment.

Out Of These Ashes

You may ask “Toyin, how can you bounce back from losing your $10 million business and your family, all while facing a four-count felony indictment?

Two words: Real estate.

It is because of real estate that I was able to generate the cash flow to brawl it out in the courtroom. Thank God for real estate! I not only bounced back, I built a company five times bigger than my previous business while fighting the indictment for nine whole years.

I was buying and selling houses at the rate of 5-10 per month and each deal was earning me $40,000 to $50,000. Good ol’ real estate, the infallible formula. My ability to speak real estate is the reason I know I never have to be poor again in America. Even if I somehow find my way to poverty again, I don’t have to stay there.

Deciphering the Rosetta Stone

So, if you are reading this and you don’t speak real estate, make it your priority to learn this language and teach it to your children. Real estate is an unparalleled vehicle for wealth creation. Fluency in real estate is what separates America’s average earner from her infamous one percent.

Don’t limit your American Dream to just one house. Learn how to buy more houses and use each house as a vehicle to transport you to true wealth. All the secrets to success are available to you, but you may need a guiding hand somewhere along the way.
